Mining Augmented Reality and Virtual E-Learning (MARVEL) Technologies Beta Testing

Before a product, application, or service is made available to the public, it is tested by a group of users or testers as part of the software development process known as beta testing. The purpose of beta testing is to find and fix any problems or bugs in the product and to get input from actual users on how to make the user experience better. Internal testing and bug fixes are usually the main focus of beta testing, which happens after the product has gone through alpha testing, an earlier testing phase carried out by the development team. The product is usually considered stable enough to be made available for beta testing to a select number of outside. During the beta testing phase, users are given the option to utilize the product directly and share their thoughts on it. Their comments may cover anything from the product’s overall usability and user interface design to any flaws or problems they run into. Subsequently, the development team employs this data to enhance the product and guarantee that it fulfills the requirements of its target audience. The beta testing of MARVEL Technologies was conducted at Cebu Institute of Technology- University, Cebu City; Marawi State University-Iligan Institute of Technology; University of Southeastern Philippines; Apex Mining Company Incorporated (AMCI) Davao De Oro, started April 11,n2024, and concluded on April 19, 2024   Iligan Institute of Technology, Iligan City, started April 17, 2023, and concluded on April 28, 2023.

MARVEL Technologies Beta Testing at Cebu Institute of Technology-University, Cebu City

On April 11, 2023, the MARVEL Technologies project team visited Cebu Institute of technology-University in Cebu City to conduct a beta testing of their developed (AR/VR) technology for mine safety and drills. The team was welcomed by Dr. Evangeline Evangelista the Chairperson and Dean of the Mining Engineering, facilitated the participation of BS Mining Engineering students and faculty members. During the visit, participants were immersed in the world of augmented and virtual reality technology, where they had the unique opportunity to visualize and simulate mine safety training and drills. Utilizing multiplayer functionality, they were able to engage in collaborative experiences, enhancing their understanding and preparedness for emergency situations. This hands-on approach provided them with a realistic and interactive environment, offering valuable assistance and guidance should they ever face such scenarios in the future. The participants discovered that integrating AR/VR technology into learning made the experience more captivating, interactive, and immersive. This innovation enabled them to delve into mining activities with a heightened sense of realism, offering a more profound understanding of the subject matter. Dr. Evangeline Evangelista expressed immense gratitude towards the MARVEL Technologies project team for extending the opportunity for their students to experience the technology firsthand. Through this interaction, she gained a profound realization of the boundless applications of AR/VR in education. Beyond its efficacy in mining education, she noted its potential in enhancing safety training methodologies. The project leader of MARVEL Technologies, led the awarding ceremony and presented the certificate of appreciation, on behalf of Cebu Institute of Technology-University, in recognition of their invaluable support throughout the successful beta testing phase of MARVEL Technologies.

MARVEL Technologies Beta Testing at Iligan Institute of Technology, Iligan City

On April 15, 2024, the project team conducted beta testing of MARVEL Technologies at Marawi State Univeristy-IIT, Iligan City. The team welcomed by Dr. Ma. Sheila K. Ramos the dean of the College of Engineering.  the team was warmly welcomed by the students and guided to the conference room, which served as the venue for the beta test.  The development team efficiently set up the computers and VR equipment for the testing while the administration team managed the attendance sheet and consent form for the attendees. The activity commenced with a prayer led by a student, followed by a warm welcome address from the Dean of the Mining Engineering Department and the Opening Remarks by the Project Leader Dr. Jaymer M Jayoma. Mr. Elbert Moyon, one of the Project Staff provided the detailed information of the project to the Mining Engineering students and Senior High School STEM Students of Marawi State University- IIT. Then they were given the consent form and duly signed it, understanding the importance of this step before delving into the VR experience. After the testing, the MARVEL Technologies project team awarded the College of Engineering a certificate of appreciation and a token of recognition. This recognizes their significant contribution to the project.

MARVEL Technologies Beta Testing at University of Southeastern Philippines, Davao City.

MARVEL Technologies conducted beta testing at the University of Southeastern Philippines, Mining Engineering Department. On April 17, 2024 the day started with visiting the Engineering Department Faculty office. We collaborated closely with them, aligning our beta test with academic standards and objectives.  The team had the privilege of meeting with the President, engaging in a brief discussion about the project. Highlighting key aspects of our project and its potential impact to the Mining Industry. A Project Staff of MARVEL Technologies, gave an overview of the project.  The testing activity started with basic training on the functionalities of the VR Head gear. Students were provided a consent form that contained an agreement that they voluntarily participated in the beta testing activity. After each student completed the AR/VR for mine safety training and drills, comments and feedback were then gathered through the evaluation form. The beta testing activity concluded with a closing remark from Dr. Jaymer M. Jayoma. A token and certificate of appreciation was awarded to the Mining Engineering Department to recognize their participation in the successful beta testing of MARVEL Technologies.

Beta Testing of MARVEL Technologies at Apex Mining Company Inc., Davao De Oro

The project team conducted beta testing of MARVEL Technologies at Apex Mining Company Inc., (AMCI) on April 24, 2023, at Maco, Mawab Davao De Oro. They were welcomed by Engr. Arnel Delute who led them to the staff house for a meal and also, he assisted the whole activity. The team immediately set up all the equipment at the old conference room and began the testing with the mining engineers. The activity involved using AR/VR technology to simulate and visualize mine safety training, allowing the participants to understand the concepts and procedures involved. During the testing, mining engineers got the opportunity to experience the virtual mine safety training and drill. Two virtual reality (VR) headsets and a projector were employed to assess the system’s performance. This setup allowed for immersive multiplayer experiences, which greatly contributed to the refinement and development of the system. The tester found a great satisfaction in using the system due to its remarkable realism, especially in simulating safety training within the confines of an underground mine.

On the second day of beta test at Apex Mining Company Inc., continues and new mining engineers had chance to try the Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality for mine safety training and drills. After the successful testing activity, the mining engineers who participated on the activity were asked to share their insights. After completing the testing process, the project team and engineers from AMCI had through discussion regarding the year three plan of the project. One of the testers shared their insights about the developing technologies. In general, AMCI offered favorable feedback and committed to assisting collaborating closely with the project team to guarantee its success. The conclusion featured an award ceremony where AMCI received a certificate of gratitude for their support during the successful beta testing process.
